Where will my massage session take place?
Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a massage table especially designed for your comfort.
Must I be completely undressed, and will I be covered during the session?
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however you may undress to your comfort level. You will be properly draped at all times with a sheet and or blanket to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed. Sports massage clients generally wear shorts because of different stretching techniques that are used during the session.
What should I do during the massage session?
Many people just close their eyes and relax. You will be asked to take some deep breaths and to focus on your breathing during the massage. The massage therapist will ask you how the pressure is (1 being very light to 10 being very painful). The pressure should never go over a 7 or an 8. If you are tensing up to the therapist’s touch, then relaxation and pain relief cannot be achieved.
How will I feel after the massage session?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity, which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water following your massage.
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that a confidential health history form is completed before the first session. Any health problems you are having or any medications you are taking must be revealed to the therapist before the session. Many practitioners may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.
How often should I receive a massage?
It depends on your specific goals. If you are in training for an athletic competition and don’t have any injuries, it will benefit you to come in for a sports massage once a week or at least every other week. If you have a specific condition to be treated, you may want to come in for shorter session 2-3 times a week. If you are for the most part in good health, it is advised to come in once a month.
